Paint Protection HistoryPaint Protection History

Paint Protection Film (PPF) was originally created by 3M to protect helicopter blades and military transport vehicles during the Vietnam War. At inception, the thick, lightweight and inconspicuous covering was often known as “helicopter tape.” Today, 3M film is still being applied to military vehicles.

Like most technological advancements created for military use, a version usually reaches the private sector. The original version was thick for helicopter blades but technology has now perfected a thin, virtually invisible film. This evolution led to the explosion in popularity, with the film used on private sector street vehicles. Born from necessity the product flourished. Recent projections show the paint protection film industry on track to reach $1.5 billion by the year 2022.

Today’s Paint Protection

Today’s highly advanced films are widely used across the world. Self healing films are protecting paint surfaces from scratches and chips and repelling damage caused by road debris. PPF is also protecting bumpers and doors from parking lot damage. From Ferrari and Lamborghini to Toyota and Mazda, any vehicle is primed to receive ppf.

Available in many options, automotive PPF is clear to the eye and sold in a variety of colors. While 3M is still considered an industry leader, they have serious competition from the likes of SunTek, CCL, Hexis and XPEL.

Most new product installations are backed by a 10 year warranty direct from the manufacturer. These warranties are fully transferable to any owner of the vehicle which can help maintain resale value.
